Noah's Home School

Yes, I know it has been almost two months since I have posted, and everyone wants to know how Noah is doing and what is going on with him these days. Just to let you know, my "new" year's resolution (early or late -- you decide) is to post a lot more to keep everyone more informed.

Right now Noah is doing very well. Not only is he in a lot less pain with his hip these days, but he is also starting to do a lot more physical program -- lots of inclines and gravity assisted creeping. Still not up to the number that he needs to be, but slowly getting there. I'll post pictures soon.

Our newest tidbit of information is that Noah is now officially signed up as a home school student. Of course we have pretty much been doing steady schooling for the past five and a half years, but now we are legal! I guess the only thing that really changes is that I have more paperwork so that I can prove that we are doing home school.

I did get a few textbooks in science and social studies to make sure Noah doesn't miss anything that would be covered in school, of course we have to supplement these heavily. For instance, in science we are covering the five senses, but whereas the textbook tells him that you use your eyes to see (as if there weren't a first grader that could tell you that already), we will cover the parts of the eye, what each of the parts do, and the areas of the brain that are thought to govern sight.

Reading and Literature is a bit of a problem. We took the "reading" part out seeing as he reads better than I do (in both English and Spanish), and just made it "Literature". But how do you find a high school level study of literature that is appropriate for a six-year-old? Still working on it, but Noah really enjoyed The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which he finished a couple days ago. I thought we'd tone things down a bit and lighten the mood by doing Stuart Little next. Of course he is getting the Magic Tree House series in Spanish, which is also light and fun.

Of course we are working on Algebra I right now for math, and Noah is loving it. He just keeps telling me I am not moving fast enough. I have to enlarge all this stuff so that he can see it! Does he think program materials grow on trees?

We'll keep you updated on home school materials, but our last bit of news is that Furman won their first game of the season. Noah had a great time at the game and was so happy to get to stay for the whole thing! Go Paladins.
