AK Biofeedback

Well, this is one part of the newest program we will add to Noah's routine this period. This program is designed to teach Noah to use the muscles his brain has forgotten how to use due to his brain injury. We use a machine called the Myotrac that measures electrical impulses (measured in microbolts) given off by the muscle when it is contracted. I won't bore you with the normal microbolts produced compared with the amount that Noah produces in the muscles he does not utilize well, but it is much less.

Anyhow, we use this device by putting electrodes on a muscle that he doesn't use well, and we tell him to contract that particular muscle. When he contracts the muscle, the device makes a noise to let him know that he has done it. That is the feedback part. We have been doing it just two days now, and already we are seeing a difference in how well he can contract his gluteus. This is a very important muscle for all types of movement.

Anyway, we will be doing the gluteus maximus, the medius (which helps to keep the hip in place), the tibialis (which helps keep his feet flexed), and a muscle in his arm to help him better open his hands.
