Brain Injured and Brilliant

Noah uses facilitated communication to tell us what he is thinking -- anything that he is thinking. I hold his finger out and pull his hand back, and he pushes it forward to point to letters spelling out whatever he wants to say. It takes some of the effort out that would make it impossible for him.

It is wonderful, really, because you get good insight into his personality and an idea of what he is thinking in a given situation. Of course we have been doing an intellectual program for a long time, and you don't have to be around Noah for very long to see that he is very bright.

I say all this because I am going to share a few things that Noah has said recently. Today, for instance, he met someone new, and he wanted to tell them a bit about himself. First he said, "I am very smart and I am also sweet and funny." He pointed very quickly and precisely to the letters just like he normally does. Then he added another line, but he got so tickled with what he was going to say, that he kept pausing to giggle. After a number of giggling pauses he finally spelled out, "It is very hard for me to be modest because I am so smart."

A few days before I told him that he was a little rascal, and he replied, "I am a rascal, but I am a sweet rascal!" And he also told me, "Everybody who gets to know me loves me." (which, of course, is quite true).

Some time before that we were talking about helicopters and airplanes and he told me, "I would like to be a pilot of an airplane and a helicopter," and then to make me feel better he added, "but I am very careful so it would be very safe."

He is so much fun and such a joy! I wish everyone could know him as well as I do!

That's so wonderful! I'm not surprised at all at how smart he is!
