Oh, no you didn't!

Some people need to spend a little more time thinking about what they say before they speak. One of those people spoke to me last week, and I still feel irritated every time I think about it.

I was feeling a bit under the weather (never the time to say something ridiculous to me), and as we have moved, I had to go see a doctor I have never seen before. I was ushered into a room by a very nice nurse, and we began to discuss what was going on with me as well as a bit of my history. When she asked me what I "do", I mentioned to her that I have a special needs child and that I do a special program with him at home.

Her response was, "Oh, that puts an extra burden on you."

I responded to her that my son was great and a joy, and she continued treating me like I was living under some miserable circumstance. I gave up trying to convince her that I live a very happy, fulfilling life, and finally she left.

Noah is a lot of things. He is a joy; he is sweet and funny. He is a lot of fun, and he is even a lot of work. But he is not, nor has he ever been, a burden.
