Thank goodness for Dr. Seuss, however, because today it is understood that children will be more likely to read if they find the subject matter fun and/or interesting. Now there are shelves full of colorful and fun books that make children laugh, and would you believe it -- actually want to read.
The object is teaching children to read, and though all the subject matter in life is not always interesting, the better a child can read, the more likely he or she will be to tackle tougher material. And making reading fun and interesting is essential to learning to read well.
What I love is that while both of my children read on their own now, they will still curl up with me to listen (and laugh) as I try to wrap my tongue around Fox in Sox.
So thank you, Dr. Seuss!! Happy Birthday!
And if you are one of the people who thinks Dr. Seuss books are pointless and ridiculous, disregard this and have fun "seeing Dick run".
